$DUOL Won't Fall, and the Shorts Are Running Out of Time. How Does This End?
A crowded short against a stock that refuses to fall is a position with a deadline. My read on how it ends.

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).
Duolingo keeps going up and the short keeps pressing. One of those has to give.
$DUOL sits at $153.00, $0.56 below its 20-day high of $153.56 and $27.88 above its 20-day low of $125.12.
My read: bullish. Buyers are in control and the evidence backs it, though I still want the level to clear on volume.
The shorts have a problem
Against its own 60-session range, $DUOL is 8.6% below the high of $167.38 (Sep 3) and 22.3% above the low of $125.12 (Nov 3). $DUOL closed higher in 5 of its last 9 sessions.
Volume over the last five sessions averaged 1.4x the twenty sessions before them.
The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was +6.6% on Oct 15. 59% of DUOL's off-exchange volume printed as short sales (FINRA daily short volume). The stock is already running: shorts are losing, not waiting.
What I make of it: a crowded short matters only if the stock stops falling, and then covering becomes buying. Whether that starts here is the whole question.
Who is positioned for what
Off-exchange trading: NORMAL: $765K block at $153.00, -33% yesterday's biggest. Biggest single off-exchange print: 5,000 shares at $153.00, about $765K, on a downtick (seller hit). A print that size is one order being crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades.
Squeeze risk 0 of 100; shorts pressing 81 of 100. Across the broader market, the read is Neutral (bias +1). Insiders: quiet.
On the daily chart, technical patterns include inside_bar, spinning_top, outside_bar in a flat trend.
Price is above its 20-day average of $141.05 by 8.5%.
What I make of it: the data agrees with itself more than it argues, and that counts for something. It still falls short of proof.
The bull case
- Short squeeze setup with a measured path to $174.42
The bear case
- Backdrop: Neutral (bias +1)
- High short volume is routine in liquid names
What I think traders are overlooking
What I think traders are overlooking is how little room the thesis needs. The line that proves it wrong is close and the level it points to is not, which is the kind of imbalance I like to see.
None of that is visible in the candles.
What happens next, and when I'm out
If $DUOL posts a close above the recent high on rising volume and volume expands, I think $174.42 becomes the next serious test. Under $137.70, I'm wrong.
The honest objection is that short volume is not a short position. A high ratio is routine in liquid names, and sometimes the shorts are simply right.
Clear the level on volume and I'm interested. Fail below the line and I'm out of the idea.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A close through $137.70.
- Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
- Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
- A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.
My read
I'm leaning on the side of the buyers here. The evidence supports it, and the line that proves me wrong is close enough to respect.
Desk record. 24 of 130 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (18%), 68 stopped out, 38 ran out of time, average outcome +1.45% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.
The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
