$FLG Won't Fall, and the Shorts Are Running Out of Time. How Does This End?
A crowded short against a stock that refuses to fall is a position with a deadline. My read on how it ends.

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).
Flagstar Bank, National Association keeps going up and the short keeps pressing. One of those has to give.
$FLG sits at $10.58, $1.94 below its 20-day high of $12.52 and $0.32 above its 20-day low of $10.90.
My read: lean bullish. Buyers are close enough to force the issue, but I want volume before I call it a breakout.
A short that will not fall
Against its own 60-session range, $FLG is 26.9% below the high of $14.48 (Aug 3) and 2.9% above the low of $10.90 (Oct 19).
$FLG closed higher in 3 of its last 9 sessions. Volume over the last five sessions averaged 1.2x the twenty sessions before them. The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was +3.3% on Oct 22.
56% of FLG's off-exchange volume printed as short sales (FINRA daily short volume), against a normal 62%.
Days to cover: 8.5. Every short in the name needs 8.5 full days of normal volume to get out.
What I make of it: a crowded short matters only if the stock stops falling, and then covering becomes buying. Whether that starts here is the whole question.
What is already in the price
Off-exchange trading: QUIET: no block prints, 29% off-exchange. No block-size prints (10,000+ shares or $1M+) in this window. Off-exchange volume is spread across small prints, which is what internalized retail flow looks like. Days to cover 8.5, 47.1M shares short, short interest +35.3% since the last report. Squeeze risk 5 of 100; shorts pressing 91 of 100.
Across the broader market, the read is Lean bearish (bias -20).
Sentiment readings show neutral (-12 of 100). Insiders: quiet.
What I make of it: the data agrees with itself more than it argues, and that counts for something. It still falls short of proof.
The bull case
- Short squeeze setup with a measured path to $12.84
The bear case
- Backdrop: Lean bearish (bias -20)
- High short volume is routine in liquid names
The detail that changes the read
What I think traders are overlooking is how little room the thesis needs. The line that proves it wrong is close and the level it points to is not, which is the kind of imbalance I like to see.
That part doesn't show up on the chart.
The call, and the line that breaks it
If $FLG posts a close above the recent high on rising volume and volume expands, I think $12.84 becomes the next serious test. Under $9.52, I'm wrong.
The honest objection is that short volume is not a short position. A high ratio is routine in liquid names, and sometimes the shorts are simply right.
So the plan is simple. Wait for the level, wait for the volume, and respect the line.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A close through $9.52.
- Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
- Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
- A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.
Where I land
I lean higher, not loudly. The setup earns the lean and not the conviction, and it gets the conviction only when volume shows up.
Desk record. 7 of 19 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (37%), 12 stopped out, 0 ran out of time, average outcome +6.2% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.
The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
