The S&P 500 through $SPY: Dealers Are Short Gamma in $SPY. Is $835.79 the Number They Hedge Toward?

The options book can push a stock further than opinion can. My read on the level it is pointing at.

The S&P 500 through $SPY: Dealers Are Short Gamma in $SPY. Is $835.79 the Number They Hedge Toward?

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

The chart on State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust looks ordinary. The options book does not.

$SPY sits at $773.09, $8.53 below its 20-day high of $781.62 and $14.30 above its 20-day low of $758.79.

My read: binary, event-driven. This one belongs to the calendar more than the chart.

Dealers have a deadline

Against its own 60-session range, $SPY is 1.1% below the high of $781.62 (Oct 6) and 6.0% above the low of $729.10 (Jul 29).

$SPY closed higher in 5 of its last 9 sessions. Volume over the last five sessions was in line with the twenty sessions before them (1.0x). The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -1.1% on Oct 16.

Dealers are short gamma on SPY: they have to buy as it rises and sell as it falls, which is what turns a move into a run.

100% of the open options are same-day expiries, the fuel that makes gamma moves violent in the final hours.

What I make of it: when the hedging runs the same direction as the price, it stops being background noise and starts being the move.

What the market looks to be pricing in

Off-exchange trading: NORMAL: $9.8M block at $773.51, under half yesterday's biggest. Biggest single off-exchange print: 12,629 shares at $773.51, about $9.8M, on a downtick (seller hit). A print that size is one order being crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades. In options, dealers short gamma, call wall $780.00, put wall $620.00, gamma flip near $769.00, 100% of open options expire today, hedge pressure 4% of an average day's volume. Days to cover 2.0, 98.5M shares short, short interest +1.7% since the last report.

Squeeze risk 20 of 100; shorts pressing 62 of 100.

Earnings today (2026-10-21); the options market prices a 0.2% move. Across the broader market, the read is Neutral (bias +17).

What I make of it: the pieces mostly point the same way as the price, which is more than I can say for most setups. None of them is proof.

The bull case

  • Gamma squeeze setup with a measured path to $835.79

The bear case

  • Backdrop: Neutral (bias +17)
  • A binary earnings event inside the window
  • Strikes are often crossed without a reaction

The part nobody is talking about

What I think traders are overlooking is the volume. Price can drift to a level on almost nothing, and what it does there needs real participation. Without it, a break is easy to fade.

The price alone doesn't show it.

If I'm right, and what proves me wrong

If $SPY posts a push through $780.00 on volume and volume expands, I think $835.79 becomes the next serious test. Under $718.97, I'm wrong.

The honest objection is that open interest shows contracts, not who holds which side, so any dealer map is an inference. Strikes with heavy interest get crossed without a ripple more often than people admit.

That's the whole trade: a level to clear, a line that proves me wrong, and not much in between.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A close through $718.97.
  • Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
  • Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
  • A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.

What I'm watching

This one belongs to the calendar, not the chart. Whatever I think of the setup, the report gets a vote, and I'd size accordingly.

Desk record. 5 of 13 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (38%), 8 stopped out, 0 ran out of time, average outcome +9.73% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
