The S&P 500 through $SPY: gamma is loaded at $766.48 with the call wall at $770.00
Dealers are short gamma under a call wall only 0.5% away, but the buying has not started and I am not pretending otherwise.

$SPY sits at $766.48 and the number I care about is $770.00, only 0.5% above. That is the call wall, where the most call open interest is stacked. Dealers are short gamma. Between here and there you have a spring, and nobody has leaned on it yet.
Let me be straight about what I actually have. Gamma is loaded. The buying has not started. The squeeze risk gauge reads 15 of 100, and I would rather quote you that than sell you a run that is not happening.
The spring
Short gamma means dealers buy as the tape rises and sell as it falls. That is how a move becomes a run. The hedge flows would absorb 11% of a normal day's volume, which is not nothing, but it is not a flood either. It takes a push to make it matter.
Then there is the fuel. 100% of the open options expire today. Same day paper is what makes the final hours ugly, because everything reprices fast and dealers have no time to be patient. I have watched this setup grind sideways all session and then go vertical in the last stretch. I have also watched it just die. Both happen.
Shorts are the other half
Here is what keeps me interested. 45% of off exchange prints were short sales. Shorts are pressing, 87 of 100 on my gauge. The gamma case and the short case are the same case, because the people leaning down are the ones who get squeezed if dealers have to chase.
The cover math is not scary on its own. 98.5M shares short, days to cover 2.0, short interest up 1.7% since the last report. That is a crowded boat, not a sinking one.
The biggest print was 1,000,000 shares at $766.49, about $766M, on a downtick. A seller hit it. That is one order crossed away from the public book, not a crowd, and it ran 32% smaller than yesterday's biggest. I read it as normal. It does not change my mind.
The bull case
- Dealers short gamma, forced to buy strength
- Call wall only 0.5% overhead with air above it
- Shorts pressing at 87 of 100 with 2.0 days to cover
- 100% of options expiring today adds fuel
The bear case
- Squeeze risk only 15 of 100
- Call wall at $770.22 has dealers selling into it
- Crowd leaning bearish at -16 of 100
- Doji and spinning tops show indecision
Where the stops are
The map is tidy. Equal lows sit at $767.28 and $762.99, and stops rest underneath them. Above, there is a supply block at $773.68 and a call wall marked at $770.22 where dealers sell into strength. That last one is the trap. If the wall absorbs everything, the squeeze never shows up.
So my trigger is simple: a push through $770.00 on volume. Confirmation is call volume outrunning put volume while dealers chase the hedge. Without both, I have a pretty chart and nothing else.
Earnings land today, and the options market prices a 0.1% move. I do not lean on that. A $5.02M multi leg trade across the $730 and $732 strikes crossed the tape too, and I do not know whose hedge it is. I noted it and moved on. The put wall is way down at $655.00.
How I am playing it
I am not long yet. The daily shows a doji and a pair of spinning tops in a flat trend, which is indecision dressed up as a pattern. Crowd sentiment leans bearish at -16 of 100, and insiders are quiet. MEM ALGO's short model has no signal. The tape is not one sided, and I will not short a failed bounce unless it fails into an ask wall.
If the push comes, the scenario target is $853.40, up 11.3% over days, where the call wall sits and the hedge buying runs out. I am wrong at $712.83. Until $770.00 gives way, I wait.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A failed push that closes back under today's low
- A break of $712.83
- Call volume failing to outrun put volume at $770.00
- Hedge buying fading before the push clears the supply block at $773.68
Bottom line
The spring is wound and the shorts are leaning on it, but a wound spring is not a move. I want the push through $770.00 on volume before I put money behind $853.40. If it fails and closes under today's low, I walk away and say so.
The desk leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
