The S&P 500 through $SPY: Is Knocking on $781.62. Why I'm Watching $800.13 Next
The stock is close enough to force the issue. My read on whether it does, and what I need to see first.

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).
State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust has run up to a ceiling and stopped. Whether it breaks through or backs away is the whole story.
$SPY sits at $769.36, $12.26 below its 20-day high of $781.62 and $10.68 above its 20-day low of $758.68.
My read: lean bullish. Buyers are close enough to force the issue, but I want volume before I call it a breakout.
Stuck just under the high
Against its own 60-session range, $SPY is 1.6% below the high of $781.62 (Oct 6) and 2.6% above the low of $749.60 (Sep 16). $SPY closed higher in 6 of its last 9 sessions. Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.8x the twenty sessions before them.
The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -1.2% on Oct 22.
Price is below its 20-day average of $771.16 and above the 50-day at $767.63. The stock is +0.7% over five sessions and +0.7% over twenty.
What I make of it: when a stock stalls under a high without selling off, the sellers up there are either exhausted or being absorbed. Either way the next push decides it.
Who is positioned for what
Off-exchange trading: NORMAL: $97.5M block at $771.86, under half yesterday's biggest. Biggest single off-exchange print: 126,311 shares at $771.86, about $97.5M, on an uptick (buyer lifted). A print that size is one order being crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades.
Days to cover 2.5, 93.0M shares short, short interest -1.5% since the last report. Squeeze risk 5 of 100; shorts pressing 72 of 100.
Sentiment readings show bearish (-49 of 100). Insiders: quiet.
On the daily chart, technical patterns include doji, spinning_top, spinning_top in a flat trend.
What I make of it: the data agrees with itself more than it argues, and that counts for something. It still falls short of proof.
The bull case
- Market narrative setup with a measured path to $800.13
The bear case
- No catalyst identified
What I think traders are overlooking
What I think traders are overlooking is the volume. Price can drift to a level on almost nothing, and what it does there needs real participation. Without it, a break is easy to fade.
None of that is visible in the candles.
What happens next, and when I'm out
If $SPY posts a close above $781.62 and volume expands, I think $800.13 becomes the next serious test. Under $753.97, I'm wrong.
The honest objection is that a build-up is obvious in hindsight and ambiguous in real time. Plenty of quiet ranges stay quiet, and nothing here is a catalyst.
Clear the level on volume and I'm interested. Fail below the line and I'm out of the idea.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A close through $753.97.
- Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
- Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
- A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.
My read
I lean higher, not loudly. The setup earns the lean and not the conviction, and it gets the conviction only when volume shows up.
Desk record. 12 of 69 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (17%), 36 stopped out, 21 ran out of time, average outcome +1.69% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.
The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
