$4.11M in premium just moved through State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ($SPY) Dec 18 $735 puts in a single large options trade on Thursday. The tape did not show a clear buyer or seller, on a strike 3.8% below the stock.

What happened

The trade printed in the final half hour, around 3:55 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 1, with $SPY trading near $764.14. 4,000 contracts went through at $10.27 apiece, or $1,027 per contract, for $4.11M in total premium.

It printed as a cross, with a buyer and seller matched in one pre-arranged print, a common way for large desks to trade size.

There were already 49,799 contracts open at this strike, so the trade could be adding to a position or unwinding one. The next open-interest update will settle which.

Why it matters

Without a clear aggressor, the trade could be opening or closing, bullish or protective. The levels still matter: $735 is the strike and $724.73 is where the position breaks even at expiration.

Adjusted for delta, the position behaves like roughly 105,800 shares of SPY, or about $80.82M of stock exposure.

With 77 days until Dec 18, this is positioning for months, not a quick flip. Implied volatility was about 17%, a calm level, so the options were relatively cheap.

Three ways this could play out

Bullish continuation

If $SPY pushes through $802.35, calls at and below $735 gain and puts lose value.

Bearish rejection

If $SPY slips under $725.93, puts at $735 gain and calls lose value.

Neutral stabilization

If $SPY chops between $725.93 and $802.35 into Dec 18, time decay does the work. Premium sellers win that fight; premium buyers lose it.

What to watch next

  • $724.73: breakeven for this trade at expiration.
  • $735 strike: whether $SPY moves toward it or away from it.
  • Open interest at the $735 put in the next session. A jump confirms a new position; a drop points to a close.
  • Repeat flow in the Dec 18 expiration. More size at nearby strikes would show this was not a one-off.
  • December 18, 2026: expiration, 77 days out.
