A 7.7% Drop in $SKHZ With Almost No Volume: Does $9.78 Hold?

A sharp fall on 0.1x volume, short sales barely above normal and almost no stored short interest: the squeeze case for $SKHZ is thinner than the label suggests, but the tape still leans my way.

A 7.7% Drop in $SKHZ With Almost No Volume: Does $9.78 Hold?

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

A stock that falls 7.7% on almost no volume is telling you who is missing from the room.

That is the puzzle in $SKHZ today, and the answer decides whether $13.12 is a real target or wishful thinking. I'll give the read I think the tape supports, including the parts that argue against me.

A Drop Nobody Sold Into

$SKHZ trades at $10.86, down 7.7% on the session, on volume of 0.1x normal. Over the last five sessions, volume averaged 0.5x the twenty sessions before them.

My read: a fall this size with that little participation looks like missing buyers, not a wave of sellers. The daily chart shows bearish_marubozu, bearish_marubozu and bearish_belt_hold candles in an up trend, and that wording matters. In an up trend, I treat bearish candles on thin volume as a pullback until price proves otherwise.

The stock has moved +14.5% over the last twenty sessions. Its largest one-day move in that window was +7.9% on Oct 22, so today's drop is roughly the size of its biggest up day. That is why I'm not dismissing it.

Why 72% Is Not the Headline

72% of $SKHZ's off-exchange volume printed as short sales, against a normal 70%. Two points above normal is not a pile-on.

My read: nobody is suddenly pressing this stock. The shorts are simply still there, and they are on the wrong side of a stock that is up over twenty sessions. The sheet scores shorts pressing at 72 of 100, but today's price action doesn't confirm it.

The confirmation I want is a second day of 72%-plus short volume with price refusing to fall. Today price fell, so that box is empty.

The bull case

  • Drop printed on 0.1x volume
  • Up trend intact over twenty sessions
  • Shorts losing while the stock runs
  • VPIN 0.99, so moves extend

The bear case

  • Squeeze risk only 9 of 100
  • 8K shares short, 1.0 days to cover
  • Smart-money read is markdown
  • Bearish gaps stacked at $11.95 to $12.10

The Fuel Problem I Won't Hide

Reported short interest is 8K shares, days to cover is 1.0, and short interest is down 98.6% since the last report. Squeeze risk scores 9 of 100, and the read for a long is that there is no squeeze set-up because short positioning is ordinary.

My read: this is not a squeeze built on stored positions. If it happens, it comes from the flow, from sellers who print short volume day after day and eventually have to buy back into a rising tape. That is speculation, and it only works if price stops falling.

Dark pool activity is quiet. There are no block prints, and off-exchange volume is 35%, spread across small prints that look like internalized retail flow. I have no evidence of an institution on either side, and I won't pretend otherwise.

The Ceiling Is a Cluster

The liquidity map has bearish gaps at $11.95, $12.00 and $12.10, with a swing low at $11.69. The last change of character was down at 11.68, and price sits below the value area, where acceptance lower is only confirmed if it holds under the VAL of 11.9.

The smart-money read is markdown, with sellers in control at a strength of 49 of 100, and bounces into those map levels are where they add. VPIN is 0.99, which is toxic: one side owns the volume buckets, market makers will widen, and moves extend.

My read: the path to $13.12 runs straight through that $11.90 to $12.10 band. That band is where I expect the real argument, because it is where sellers are already marked. The market backdrop is Neutral with a bias of +10, so there is no tailwind to lean on.

What Moves Me From Lean to Conviction

The trigger is a close above the recent high on rising volume. Volume is the missing ingredient today, and its return is what would convert this from a thin pullback into something I'd chase.

$SKHZ sits $2.26 below its 20-day high of $13.12 and $1.85 above its 20-day low of $9.01. Against the 60-session range, it is 22.7% below the high of $14.05 (Aug 10) and 20.6% above the low of $9.01 (Sep 9).

The invalidation reads: a close back under the 20-day average with short volume drying up. Price is already 1.8% under its 20-day average of $11.07, so half of that condition is met. The short-volume half is not, and that gap is the reason I say lean, not conviction.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • Close under $9.78
  • Close under the 20-day average with short volume drying up
  • No volume expansion on any push toward $11.90
  • Price falling again on a second day of 72%-plus short volume

The call. If $SKHZ closes above the recent high on rising volume and a second day of 72%-plus short volume shows price refusing to fall, I think $13.12 becomes the next serious test, a move of +20.8% over days. Under $9.78, I'm wrong, and a close under the 20-day average with short volume drying up would tell me the shorts were right all along.

Where I Land

The headline says squeeze, but the numbers say a stock with very little short interest and a drop that nobody paid up to cause. I lean bullish because a pullback on 0.1x volume inside an up trend is more often exhaustion in the sellers than strength in them, and I will change my mind at $9.78.

Desk record. 10 of 46 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (22%), 28 stopped out, 8 ran out of time, average outcome +1.6% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
