$LII: 83% Short Volume on a 4.6% Drop. Is $382.99 Still Alive?
Lennox has a crowded short and a falling price, and the first thing to settle is that today is not a squeeze.

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 3 min).
Traders attach the squeeze label to plenty of stocks that are only being sold. Lennox is a candidate today, and the honest first step is to say it has not earned the label yet.
$LII trades at $355.00, down 4.6% on the session, on volume 0.2x normal. 83% of its off-exchange volume printed as short sales, against a normal 70%. My read: heavy shorting into a falling price is pressure, not a squeeze, and the squeeze risk reading of 6 of 100 agrees with me.
So why am I leaning bullish? Because of what the shorts have built, and what they now need the stock to keep doing.
The Squeeze That Hasn't Happened
The shorts-pressing reading is 83 of 100, and the trap score is 56. The sheet's own verdict for a long is plain: this is not a squeeze, it is shorts pressing a weak tape, and nobody should buy $LII just because it is heavily shorted.
I agree with that, and it is why I am not calling this bullish outright. Today the shorts are winning. Price sits 1.7% below its 20-day average of $361.26, and a stock that cannot hold its average is not squeezing anyone.
What the Crowd Has Built
2.6M shares are short, and short interest is up 35.6% since the last report. Days to cover is 5.1, so every short in the name needs 5.1 full days of normal volume to get out.
My read: a position that grew that fast has no margin for a stock that stops falling. $LII sits 4.3% above its 60-session low of $340.32 from Oct 13, and 22.2% below the high of $456.50 from Aug 5. Fresh shorts have little cushion left, and the stock has already been marked down a long way.
Speculation: if price turns, the exit is crowded, because 5.1 days is a long line to squeeze through. That is the whole bullish case, and it depends entirely on the turn.
The bull case
- Short interest up 35.6% with 5.1 days to cover
- Price only 4.3% above the 60-session low
- Drop came on 0.2x volume with no block prints
- Demand blocks at $353.82 and $355.86 sit at price
The bear case
- Squeeze risk only 6 of 100
- Price 1.7% under the 20-day average
- Rising Wedge on the daily chart
- Neutral market backdrop gives no lift
A Falling Price Nobody Is Paying For
The 4.6% drop came on 0.2x normal volume. The dark pool read is quiet: no block prints, 27% off-exchange, with volume spread across small prints that look like internalized retail flow. Nothing on the sheet shows a large seller leaning on this stock.
My read: a heavy short percentage on a thin day says the selling is easy, not that it is large. Easy selling can reverse quickly. Volume over the last five sessions averaged 1.5x the twenty sessions before them, so attention was there until today.
The picture is not one-sided. The daily chart shows a Rising Wedge, which traditionally leans bearish, and spinning tops in a flat trend. $LII has moved -1.4% over twenty sessions and closed higher in 5 of its last 9. The largest one-day move in that window was +3.4% on Oct 22, so the stock has not been violent in either direction.
The Levels That Turn a Hunch Into a Trade
The liquidity map has demand blocks at $353.82 and $355.86, right where the stock trades, with another at $363.33 above it. The only supply block listed is $379.43. $LII is $27.99 below its 20-day high of $382.99 and $14.68 above its 20-day low of $340.32. The market backdrop is Neutral, with a bias of +10, so the tape will not carry this stock on its own.
The trigger is a close above the recent high on rising volume. Confirmation is a second day of 83%-plus short volume with price refusing to fall, which is shorts pressing into strength and failing. Speculation: that is the day the position becomes a liability.
The thesis has a gap I should name. The invalidation on the sheet is a close back under the 20-day average with short volume drying up. Price is already under that average, but short volume has not dried up. The shorts are still pressing, and they have not yet been proven right.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- Close under $319.50
- Close back under the 20-day average with short volume drying up
- Short pressing keeps working with price falling on rising volume
- No close above the recent high within 3 weeks
The call. If $LII closes above its recent high on rising volume after a second day of 83%-plus short volume with price refusing to fall, I think $382.99 (+7.9%) is reachable over 1 to 3 weeks, with $379.43 the last supply block to clear. Under $319.50, I'm wrong, and a close back under the 20-day average of $361.26 with short volume drying up would tell me the shorts were right.
What I'm Waiting For
Today is a crowded short winning an argument on thin volume, and I will not pretend otherwise. The lean is bullish because the position is large, the cushion is small, and the exit is slow. I need the stock to stop falling while the shorts keep pressing, and until it does, this is a watchlist name.
Desk record. 10 of 46 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (22%), 28 stopped out, 8 ran out of time, average outcome +1.6% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.
The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
