$AMZN at $262.35: dark pools are buying into a quiet tape

Amazon jumped 4.9% on thin volume, but the orders underneath look like someone who wants to own it.

$AMZN at $262.35: dark pools are buying into a quiet tape

Amazon is up 4.9% at $262.35 and I don't trust the volume. It's running at 0.5x normal on a move that size. Normally that's a bounce with no sponsor behind it, the kind you fade by lunch. So I went looking for who was actually doing the buying.

The answer is in the sweeps. Most of them today are on the buy side, orders that hit several exchanges at once because the person behind them can't wait. Then there's the off-exchange share at 58% against a typical 40%. The dark pools are busier than the lit book. That's a tape I want to stay close to.

Thin on the surface, busy underneath

A low-volume rally usually tells you nobody cares. This one tells me the caring is happening somewhere else. If you only watched the lit tape you'd see a lazy grind. If you watch where the orders are routed, you see urgency in the sweeps and a heavy dark share at the same time.

The flow data fits. Sellers pushed 27% net flow and price barely moved. That's absorption. Somebody on the other side took everything offered and didn't chase it higher, which is what patient accumulation looks like. The smart-money read scores it 77 out of 100, accumulation with buyers in control.

The print that matters

The biggest single off-exchange trade was 47,074 shares at $262.66, about $12.4M, and it went off on an uptick. The buyer lifted. That is one order crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades adding up. It printed a touch above where Amazon trades now, which I like. Nobody is hiding behind a discount.

Dark pool DIX sits at 64%, so off-exchange prints lean buy. The liquidity map also shows dark pool buys at $262.00, 2k of them, right under the current price. That gives me a level to lean on. If the market wants to test the buyers, that's where they should show up.

The bull case

  • Buy-side sweeps dominate
  • Dark share at 58% with DIX at 64%
  • $12.4M block lifted on an uptick
  • Selling absorbed without price damage

The bear case

  • Volume only 0.5x normal
  • Bearish marubozu and doji in a flat trend
  • VPIN mixed, no urgency
  • Neutral backdrop gives no tailwind

What I don't like

The chart is not clean. The daily shows a double bottom, which I'd happily take, but it also shows a doji and a bearish marubozu in a flat trend. That's indecision with a sour candle in the middle of it. A flat trend means I'm not buying a breakout, I'm betting on a turn.

VPIN reads 0.363, mixed. Two-sided tape, no urgency yet, which sits awkwardly next to all those sweeps. Insiders are quiet, so no help there. The backdrop is neutral with a bias of +7, a market that won't carry me if I'm wrong. This is a stock-specific idea, and I'm treating it that way.

How I'd play it

The trigger is simple: the tape stays one-sided for another session, buy sweeps and blocks again. I don't want a single good day on half volume. I want repetition.

Confirmation is price holding above the day's VWAP while the prints keep coming. If they print and price sags under VWAP anyway, the buyers are being absorbed, not the sellers. The target is $283.34, up 8.0% over days. I'm wrong at $246.61, and I'd get out sooner if the sweeps flip sides or price goes against the prints for two sessions.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • Sweeps flip to the sell side
  • Price moves against the prints for two sessions
  • Price loses VWAP and stays under while prints continue
  • A break of $246.61

Bottom line

I like Amazon here, with doubts. The orders say accumulation, the chart says flat, and the volume says be careful. I'll let one more session of buying decide which of them is right.

The desk leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
