$DXC squeeze watch: 70% short volume into a 4.8% rip
A stock with heavy shorting is rising on 4.3x volume, and the shorts have to decide whether to press or run.

$DXC is up 4.8% at $14.27 on 4.3x normal volume, and the tape has a tell I like. Of the off-exchange volume, 70% printed as short sales. That is a lot of people leaning on a stock that is going the other way.
I lean bullish. Not because the business is lovely, because it isn't. I lean that way because of positioning and how the stock is behaving once the pressure arrives. Shorts are not waiting for a better entry here. They are already losing.
Shorts are bleeding in real time
Here is the setup. Short volume that high usually means conviction, and conviction gets expensive when price climbs against it. The stock is already running, so the pain has started. Covering, if it comes, would not happen in a quiet corner of the market. With volume at 4.3x normal, everyone is watching, and that matters. Forced buyers like an audience, because an audience supplies the liquidity they need to exit.
I would not call this a squeeze yet. A squeeze needs the shorts to blink, and so far all I can see is that they are uncomfortable.
The shorts have a case, though
Let me be fair to them. Revenue fell 5.1% year over year last quarter, after a drop of 1.2% the quarter before. The slide got worse, not better. Gross margin sits at 20.4%, down 4 pts from a year ago, and the eight-quarter trend is eroding at 0.53 pts a quarter. Insiders are quiet, so nobody with a badge is waving a flag.
That is a real bear thesis. It is also an old one, and old theses get crowded. When the story is well known and the stock still goes up, I stop asking whether the bears are right and start asking how long they can afford to be.
The bull case
- Shorts losing on a rising tape
- 4.3x volume gives covering an audience
- Double Bottom in an uptrend
- Crowded bear thesis already priced
The bear case
- Revenue down 5.1% and worsening
- Gross margin at 20.4% and sliding
- Supply block at $14.37 sits right overhead
- Seller hit a $490K block at $14.79
Levels I am watching
Overhead, there is a supply block at $14.37, right on top of the price. That is the first wall. Below, demand blocks sit at $13.78, $12.70 and $12.56. The idea is wrong at $12.84, which lands in the gap between those demand zones, so I am not relying on one block to save me.
The big dark pool print bugs me a little. A single order of 33,124 shares crossed at $14.79, about $490K, on a downtick, meaning a seller hit it. It is one order moved away from the public book, not a crowd, and I would not read it as a vote either way. But it printed above where the stock trades now, and that tells me someone was happy to sell higher. If price climbs back there, I expect company.
What has to happen next
The trigger is simple: a close above the recent high on rising volume. Then I want confirmation, a second day of 70%-plus short volume with price refusing to fall. That would be shorts pressing into strength, and it is the part that tends to hurt most.
The daily chart gives me a Double Bottom, with a doji and a spinning top in an uptrend. Indecision candles after a run are not a sin, but they are not a green light either. The market backdrop is neutral with a bias of +8, so I am not getting a tailwind. The stock has to do the work.
If it does, the target is $16.27, up 14.0% over days. That is where I think the covering runs out of sellers to meet.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A close back under the 20-day average with short volume drying up
- A close below $12.84
- No close above the recent high despite rising volume
- A second day of heavy short volume where price falls instead of holding
Bottom line
This is a trade about who is trapped, not about whether DXC is a good company. If the shorts press and lose, the move can feed itself for a few sessions. If they were right, I will find out quickly and cheaply.
The desk leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
