$HSAI squeezes to $14.11 with shorts pressing at 54%
A thin, ugly-looking rally in Hesai has shorts leaning into strength, and I want to know who blinks first.

$HSAI is up 9.2% at $14.11 and I do not entirely trust it. Volume is running at 0.1x normal. A move that size on that little participation is either a buyer with no sellers in the way, or a mirage. I lean toward the first. Lean is the right word.
What pulled me in is the other side of the tape. 54% of the off-exchange volume printed as short sales, against a normal 50%. Somebody is selling into a stock that is rising, and the flow reads as institutions buying. That is a collision, and collisions are where I like to look.
Who is pressing whom
There are 8.1M shares short. At 7.7 days to cover, getting out takes 7.7 full days of normal volume, and the exit is narrow. Short interest has already fallen -10.0% since the last report, so some of the crowd has left. The ones still here are losing money on the screen right now. They are not waiting for a better entry, because the stock is already running.
Our shorts-pressing reading is 92 of 100. Hold that number next to the stock's behavior. Pressing into a green tape is either a stubborn thesis or a trap being built, and I have been on both sides of it.
Not a textbook squeeze
I will not oversell this. Squeeze risk sits at 28 of 100. For a long, there is no squeeze set-up in the classic sense: the buying is there, but the short position is ordinary. That is why I treat this as a pressure trade and not a rocket.
The dark pool is quiet too. No block prints, 36% off-exchange, and the volume is scattered across small prints, which looks like internalized retail flow. I am not going to invent a hidden whale. Crowd sentiment is bullish at 40 of 100, which is hardly euphoria, and insiders are silent.
Then there is the opposing view. MEM ALGO's short model has an open SELL, grade A. I respect it. For a short seller the sheet says stand aside, since this is a crowded short that is being bought. I am simply taking the other side of a good model for a short window.
The bull case
- Shorts pressing at 92 of 100 into a rising tape
- Institutional buying on the tape
- 7.7 days to cover leaves a narrow exit
- Demand blocks stacked at $12.95 and $12.90
The bear case
- Volume only 0.1x normal on a 9.2% move
- Squeeze risk just 28 of 100
- MEM ALGO short model holds an open grade A SELL
- Doji and hanging man on the daily
The floor and the flush
Below the price, the liquidity map is busy. Demand blocks sit at $12.95 and $12.90, equal lows with stops resting under them at $12.88, and a high-volume node at $12.77. A flush through those stops would hurt, and it would not surprise me. It would not necessarily kill the idea, either, because the node at $12.77 is a place buyers have shown up before.
My line is $12.70. Under that, the structure has failed and I am wrong. The daily chart is not helping my mood: doji, hanging man, doji, all in a down trend. That is indecision with a hint of exhaustion. The market backdrop is Neutral with a bias of -7, so there is no tide to lift this.
What I need to see next
The trigger is a close above the recent high on rising volume. Today's volume does not qualify, which is why I am not chasing the print. I want participation to show up, not just a tidy percentage.
Confirmation is a second day of 54%-plus short volume with price refusing to fall. That is shorts pressing into strength, and it is when covering becomes forced instead of optional. If it comes, the target is $16.47, up 16.7% over 1 to 3 weeks, where the covering runs out of sellers to meet.
The failure case is plain. A close back under the 20-day average with short volume drying up means the shorts were right, and I step aside without a speech.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- Close back under the 20-day average with short volume drying up
- Price trades through $12.70
- A flush through the $12.88 stops that fails to recover the $12.77 node
- No rising-volume close above the recent high before the move fades
Bottom line
This is a bet that stubborn shorts get squeezed by buyers who keep showing up, and the thin volume is the thing I have to respect. I want the volume to prove itself before I lean harder. Until then, $12.70 is the only number that matters.
The desk leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
