$NBIZ at $37.96: dealers short gamma, eyeing $40.24

A 9.1% pop on no volume, dealers on the wrong side of gamma, and a setup I like less than the headline suggests.

$NBIZ at $37.96: dealers short gamma, eyeing $40.24

$NBIZ is up 9.1% at $37.96 and almost nobody came to watch. Volume is running 0.0x normal. I would rather say that in the first breath than bury it under the exciting parts.

I am still leaning long. Dealers are short gamma here, which is the one ingredient that can make a quiet tape get loud in a hurry. The target is $40.24, 6.0% higher, over 1 to 2 weeks. The idea is wrong at $35.30. Earnings land today, 2026-10-20, so the next session may settle the argument before I do.

The engine is parked, not broken

Short gamma means dealers buy as it rises and sell as it falls. Every tick turns into a bigger tick. That is the whole case for a run.

But hedge pressure reads 0% of an average day's volume. The engine is idling. The gamma flip sits near $21.00 and the put wall at $17.00, both a long way down, so the dealer book is not about to flip regimes on a wobble. It just has not been asked to do any work yet. A push on real volume is what asks.

A map that does not quite add up

The call wall is listed at $35.00, 0.6% above. Price is $37.96. Those two facts do not sit together, and I will not pretend they do. Either the wall is stale, or the price ran through it and left it behind.

I read it the second way. The heaviest call open interest is now beneath us, and the air pocket above is where a squeeze runs. The sheet also calls $40.24 the spot where the wall sits and hedge buying runs out. Treat that as a target I am borrowing, not a level I have verified.

The bull case

  • Dealers short gamma amplify any push
  • Markup with buyers paying up
  • DIX at 71% leans buy
  • Air pocket above toward $40.24

The bear case

  • Volume only 0.0x normal
  • Double top and bearish marubozu
  • Squeeze risk just 8 of 100
  • Earnings today can gap either way

Who is actually buying

The flow read is generous. Markup, buyers paying up, strength 100 of 100, and flow and price agree. Dark pool DIX is 71%, so off-exchange prints lean buy.

Then I look closer and some of it deflates. Large prints lean only 29% to the buy side. That is institutions printing size, but it is hardly a stampede. There are no block prints at all, and the 53% off-exchange share is spread across small tickets, which looks like internalized retail. So the buyers are real, and they may just be small.

Pullbacks into the map levels are where the positioned side adds: $37.01, $36.12 and $34.99. I would rather buy those dips than chase the pop.

What I do not like

This is a gamma story, not a short squeeze. Squeeze risk is 8 of 100. Days to cover is 1.0 on 123K shares short, though short interest is up 16.3% since the last report. Shorts are pressing at 47 of 100, but there is no pile of trapped shorts to fuel anything. If this runs, dealers do the running.

The chart is not helping either. A double top, a bearish marubozu and a doji in a flat trend. That is a tired picture. A 9.1% day on thin volume into earnings has fooled me before. Backdrop is neutral, bias -6, so no tailwind there.

Shorts have no clean edge here, though. Buyers are holding the book.

How I would play it

I want a push through the next strike cluster on volume. Then I want call volume outrunning put volume while dealers chase the hedge. Without both, this is just a green candle.

If it comes, $40.24 is the stop on the run. If it fails and closes back under today's low, I am out, and $35.30 is the hard line either way.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A failed push that closes back under today's low
  • A break of $35.30
  • Put volume keeping pace with call volume on the breakout attempt
  • Hedge pressure staying at 0% while price stalls at the next strike cluster

Bottom line

The setup has the right plumbing and the wrong crowd. Dealers are short gamma and buyers hold the book, but nobody is trading size and earnings are today. I will pay for confirmation and not a tick earlier.

The desk leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
