$AAOX is down 9.3% on thin volume while the sweeps buy

A leveraged ETF is bleeding on almost no participation, yet the aggressive orders are overwhelmingly lifting offers.

$AAOX is down 9.3% on thin volume while the sweeps buy

$AAOX sits at $4.68, down 9.3% on the session, and volume is 0.1x normal. A leveraged product sliding like that on no participation usually tells me nothing, and I almost scrolled past it. Then I opened the tape.

Intermarket sweeps today: 17772. Of those, 15042 hit the buy side. Those are orders that sprayed several exchanges at once, which is what somebody does when they want size now and don't care about the red number on the screen. Price says one thing. The aggressive flow says the opposite.

Buying into a falling price

I like this kind of disagreement, with caveats. Thin volume means a small group can push price around, so a drop of this size is less informative than it looks. But sweeps are not passive. Somebody paid up, repeatedly, while the quote was sliding.

That is the part I can't wave away. Sellers in a thin tape get lazy. Buyers who keep crossing the spread into weakness are working to a plan, and the plan is not to be cute about entry.

The block off the lit book

Fully 51% of the volume printed off-exchange, against a typical 40%. The dark pools are busier than the lit book today. The biggest print was 50,000 shares at $4.77, about $239K, on an uptick, meaning the buyer lifted. That is one order crossed away from public view, not a crowd of small trades.

I'll be fair about it. It is 47% smaller than yesterday's biggest, so this is no fresh escalation. Still, notice the price. $4.77 is above where the stock trades now, and it lines up with the equal highs. A buyer who pays a level above the market is telling you where they think it is going.

The bull case

  • Buy-side sweeps dominate the tape
  • Block bought at $4.77 on an uptick
  • Price sitting on the $4.68 demand block
  • Off-exchange share at 51% versus 40% typical

The bear case

  • Volume only 0.1x normal
  • Tweezer top and dojis show indecision
  • Neutral backdrop with bias -6
  • Block is 47% smaller than yesterday's biggest

What the chart is muttering

The daily is not clean. A long-legged doji, a tweezer top, another doji in a flat trend. That is indecision, and the tweezer top leans the wrong way for a long. I won't pretend otherwise.

The map helps. $4.68 is a demand block, which is exactly where price sits. $4.70 is the swing high just overhead, $4.66 holds the equal lows with stops resting below, and $4.77 has the equal highs with stops above. The pocket is tight. A sweep of $4.66 that gets bought back would be a good tell. A sweep that sticks would not.

Shorts are there, the squeeze is not

Short interest is up 263.0% since the last report, 3.4M shares short, days to cover 1.0. Shorts are pressing, 64 of 100, yet squeeze risk is only 20 of 100. So there is no fuel for a violent covering move. The buying is real and the short position is ordinary. If you are short, I'd stand aside, because this is a crowded short that is being bought. If you are long, don't build a thesis on a squeeze that isn't there.

Crowd sentiment is bullish at 59 of 100, and the market backdrop is neutral with a bias of -6. Nothing here to lean on, nothing to fight.

What I need next

The trigger is simple: the tape stays one-sided for another session, buy sweeps and blocks. Confirmation is price holding above the day's VWAP while the prints keep coming. If both show up, I'm aiming at $5.05, which is 7.9% above here, over days.

I'm wrong at $4.40. I'm also wrong sooner if the sweeps flip to the other side, or if price moves against the prints for two sessions. Prints that can't lift price eventually become a story about someone stuck.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • Sweeps flip to the sell side
  • Price moves against the prints for two sessions
  • Price loses VWAP and stays below it
  • A break of $4.40

Bottom line

The tape and the price are arguing, and I'm siding with the tape for now, on a short leash. I want the second session of buying before I trust it. If it doesn't come, I walk.

The desk leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
