$MRP Is Up 6.7% on 0.1x Volume. Who Is Selling Into It?
A 6.7% gain on 0.1x volume looks suspect, but the people selling into it may be the reason it keeps going.

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).
A stock climbs 6.7% and almost nobody shows up to trade it. That is the first oddity in $MRP. The second is who is on the other side of the little volume that does print.
Of $MRP's off-exchange volume, 69% printed as short sales. Those sellers are losing at $25.51, and the price at which they stop pressing is what this letter is about.
I have a number for that price, and the road to it runs through one close.
A Rally Nobody Joined
$MRP trades at $25.51, up 6.7% on the session, with volume at 0.1x normal. Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.5x the twenty sessions before them.
My read: that is thin, and thin rallies deserve suspicion. The stock closed higher in 6 of its last 9 sessions, yet over the last twenty sessions it has moved -3.8%, and the largest one-day move in that span was -8.5% on Oct 5. This is a bounce inside a weak stretch, not a trend with a clean record.
What changes the picture is who is trading against it.
The Sellers Are the Story
FINRA daily data shows 69% of MRP's off-exchange volume printed as short sales. The stock is already running, so those shorts are losing rather than waiting.
I think that matters more than the low volume. A rally that nobody chases but that keeps rising through heavy short selling is a rally where the sellers are the ones who need to act. Speculation: if they press a second day at 69% or higher and price still refuses to fall, the pressure shifts to them.
The tape leans institutional-buy, which fits that reading. The biggest single off-exchange print was 20,000 shares at $24.73, about $495K, on a downtick, so a seller hit it. That block was under half yesterday's biggest, and the stock now trades above it. I would not read it as a crowd. It was one order crossed away from the public book, and it was absorbed.
Insiders are quiet. Nothing there pushes either way, so the case rests on price and short positioning.
The bull case
- Shorts pressing into a rising price
- Institutional-buy tape
- 9.7% above the 20-day average
The bear case
- Volume only 0.1x normal
- Shooting stars on the daily
- Down 3.8% over twenty sessions
- Neutral market backdrop
The Line at $27.06
$MRP sits $1.55 below its 20-day high of $27.06 and $4.44 above its 20-day low of $21.07. Price is above its 20-day average of $23.26 by 9.7%.
My trigger is a close above $27.06 on rising volume. Today's volume does not qualify, which is why I am calling this a lean and not a conviction.
If the trigger arrives, my target is $32.17, a 26.1% gain over days. That is also the 60-session high from Sep 8, and the stock is 20.7% below it now. Speculation: that is where I expect covering to run out of sellers to meet.
The daily chart carries a spinning top and two shooting stars, one of them in a down trend. Those patterns say buyers have been rejected near highs before. I take the warning seriously, which is why I want the close and the volume before I lean harder.
Where the Thesis Dies
The idea is wrong at $22.96. That level sits just under a cluster on the liquidity map: a bullish gap at $23.05, another at $23.16 and a demand block at $23.22. The 20-day average at $23.26 sits right above them. A close beneath all of that, with short volume drying up, tells me the shorts were right.
Further down is a bullish gap at $22.09, and the Oct 14 low of $21.07 is 21.1% below the stock. I do not want to be around to find out whether those hold.
The market backdrop is Neutral with a bias of +6, so $MRP gets no help from the tape around it. If it works, it works on its own positioning.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A close under $22.96
- A close back under the 20-day average of $23.26 as short volume dries up
- A failed push at $27.06 on weak volume
- Short volume fading while price stalls
The call. If $MRP closes above $27.06 on rising volume and a second day of 69%-plus short volume fails to push it lower, I think $32.17 becomes the next serious destination, a 26.1% gain over days. I'm wrong if $MRP closes under $22.96, or slips back under its 20-day average of $23.26 while short volume dries up.
Thin Tape, Loaded Shorts
The low volume is the weakness in this setup, and the 69% short volume is its fuel. I would rather watch for the close above $27.06 than guess at it. If the shorts press once more into a stock that will not fall, they are the ones in a hurry.
Desk record. 9 of 38 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (24%), 21 stopped out, 8 ran out of time, average outcome +2.45% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.
The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
