The Nasdaq 100 looks calm through $QQQ, but price, volume and positioning all point at the same lower edge.

The Nasdaq 100 through $QQQ: Sits $13.86 Above Its Floor, and Volume Is Not Defending It

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

The Nasdaq 100 does not look broken, and that is exactly what makes this setup easy to ignore.

What is at stake is one close. $QQQ trades at $715.02, and the 20-day range floor of $701.16 is close enough that one ordinary session could test it.

The question is whether the market is pricing in a bounce or just waiting for the floor to give. I think the evidence leans toward the floor.

A Quiet Tape Inside a Loud Range

QQQ trades at $715.02, in the bottom third of its 20-day range ($701.16 to $762.86). It sits $47.84 below the 20-day high and $13.86 above the 20-day low. It is also below its 20-day average of $732.87 and its 50-day at $725.14.

The five-session change is only -0.4%, while the twenty-session change is -3.1%. My read: this is not panic. It is a slow bleed that has lasted long enough to leave price pinned under both averages.

Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.9x the twenty sessions before them. Nobody is rushing in to defend this tape, and nobody is dumping it either. The average true range is 1.7% of the price, wider than a month ago, so the quiet is sitting on top of a more volatile stock.

What the Sellers Left at $717.00

The biggest off-exchange print was 45,000 shares at $717.00, about $32.3M, on a downtick. That is a seller hitting a bid, and it was one order crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades.

The block was under half of yesterday's biggest, and the dark pool read is NORMAL. My read: this is a modest seller sitting just above the current price, not an escalation, but it does mark $717.00 as a place where supply showed up.

The liquidity map has a cluster nearby: equal highs with stops above at $714.83, a bearish gap at $716.33, a value area low at $711.22, and a demand block at $703.95. Speculation: a bounce into the $714.83 to $716.33 zone that fails would be the cleanest short entry on the board, with the demand block at $703.95 the first place buyers have a real claim.

The bull case

  • Buyers closed higher in 4 of the last 9 sessions
  • Bullish belt hold on the daily chart
  • Demand block at $703.95 below
  • Squeeze risk is low, but sentiment is not bearish

The bear case

  • Price below the 20-day and 50-day averages
  • Bottom third of the 20-day range
  • Shorts pressing at 76 of 100
  • Seller hit on the $717.00 block

The Crowd Is Leaning the Other Way

Crowd sentiment reads leaning bullish, at 12 of 100. Short interest is up 12.0% since the last report, with 82.0M shares short and 2.4 days to cover. Shorts pressing scores 76 of 100, and squeeze risk is only 15 of 100.

My read: this is not a crowded short waiting to be squeezed. The positioning is ordinary, so a break lower would not be fighting a coiled spring. The crowd is mildly hopeful and the short side is leaning in, and I think the short side has the better tape.

The daily chart shows a bullish belt hold, a spinning top and a doji in a flat trend. Those are indecision patterns, not reversal confirmation. The market backdrop reads Neutral with a bias of -2, which does not help the bulls. A short model also has an open sell at grade A, though the tape is not one-sided yet.

The Line, and the Trap Just Under It

The trigger is a close below $701.16, the edge of the 20-day range. The 60-session low of $700.00 (Sep 16) sits just underneath, so the first poke through may look like nothing. I want a close, not an intraday dip, and I want volume expanding in the direction of the break instead of fading.

If that happens, the target is $686.42, a -4.0% move and about two average ranges from here, over 1 to 3 weeks. That is speculation, and it depends on the volume condition. Without it, a break below $701.16 is just another test of a floor that has held.

The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -2.9% on Oct 22, and QQQ closed higher in 4 of its last 9 sessions. Buyers are still showing up often enough that I will not call this a trend until the close confirms it.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A close above $729.32
  • A bounce through the bearish gap at $716.33 that holds
  • A break of $701.16 on fading volume that is quickly reclaimed
  • Price reclaiming the 50-day at $725.14 with expanding volume

The call. If QQQ closes below $701.16 with volume expanding instead of fading, I think $686.42 becomes the working target over 1 to 3 weeks. A close above $729.32 puts the stock back inside the range it is trying to leave, and then I'm wrong.

The Floor Decides

The Nasdaq 100 is not telling anyone to panic, and that is why $701.16 matters more than the headline. A fading bounce under $716.33 would be my first warning, and a volume-backed close below the floor would be my confirmation. Until then, I lean bearish and keep the stop at $729.32.

Desk record. 9 of 38 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (24%), 21 stopped out, 8 ran out of time, average outcome +2.45% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bearish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
