The Nasdaq 100 through $QQQ: Is Stuck Under Its 50-Day at $725.35. What Happens at $701.16?

The Nasdaq 100 is drifting under both of its key averages on thin volume, and the floor below it is closer than the quiet tape suggests.

The Nasdaq 100 through $QQQ: Is Stuck Under Its 50-Day at $725.35. What Happens at $701.16?

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

The Nasdaq 100 looks like it is holding. I think it is more likely preparing to leave, and the evidence is in how quiet the holding has been.

$QQQ, the market's proxy for the index, trades at $721.70. That is below its 20-day average of $732.28, below its 50-day at $725.35, and in the bottom third of a 20-day range that runs from $701.16 to $762.86.

My read is Lean bearish, with a scenario target of $692.83 over 1 to 3 weeks. The number sits below the 60-session low, and that detail is the reason I care about this setup.

A Drift That Is Getting Louder

$QQQ is -0.5% over five sessions and -2.4% over twenty. The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -2.9% on Oct 22. It closed higher in 5 of its last 9 sessions, so this has not been a collapse. It has been a slow lean.

The average true range is 1.6% of the price, wider than a month ago. Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.9x the twenty sessions before them. Daily swings are growing while participation is shrinking.

My read: that combination is how a range erodes. Nobody is rushing to sell, and nobody is paying up to defend. The daily chart shows a bullish belt hold, a spinning top and a doji in a flat trend, which is indecision, and indecision under two falling averages usually resolves toward the averages' side.

One Buyer Is Not a Crowd

The biggest off-exchange print was 90,000 shares at $721.81, about $65.0M, on an uptick. The sheet classes it as normal, under half yesterday's biggest. A print that size is one order being crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades.

I do not dismiss it. Somebody lifted size at essentially the current price. But a single block that fails to push the index back over $725.35 tells me the buyer is patient and the tape is not following.

That is the part I think traders are overlooking. They see a buyer and read support. I see a buyer that has not changed the price.

The bull case

  • Close back above $736.13
  • Buyer lifting size at $721.81
  • Closed higher in 5 of last 9 sessions
  • Demand block at $714.33

The bear case

  • Under both the 20-day and 50-day
  • Range expanding while volume fades
  • Floor only $20.54 below
  • Largest recent move was down

The Stairs Down to the Floor

The liquidity map shows where the price would have to stop on the way down. The value area low is $720.56, just under the current price. Equal lows sit at $724.46, with stops below them, and the price is already beneath that line. Further down are a demand block at $714.33 and a bullish gap at $711.26.

My read: those are speed bumps, not walls. Each is a place where buyers can show up, but a thin-volume market has little to defend them with. The first real wall is the $701.16 edge of the range, which is $20.54 below the current price.

The 60-session low is $700.00 from Sep 16, 3.1% below here. A close under $701.16 puts the index through the bottom of the 20-day range and into the September low. The $692.83 target is about two average ranges from here, and it only works if that low gives way.

The Part That Argues Against Me

Shorts are pressing, and the numbers say so: 82.0M shares short, days to cover 2.4, and short interest up 12.0% since the last report. The pressing score is 82 of 100. The squeeze risk is only 13 of 100.

That is a split signal. There is fuel for a squeeze, but the buying has not arrived. If the index recovers $725.35 and then $732.28, a crowded short side becomes a source of buying, and my thesis weakens quickly.

This is why I do not want to short the drift. I want the break. The confirmation I need is volume expanding in the direction of the move instead of fading, because a close under $701.16 on 0.9x volume is a hint, not a signal. Speculation: if the break comes on real volume, the stacked levels above it turn into resistance and the decline can run on its own.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A close above $736.13
  • Reclaim of $732.28 with volume behind it
  • Squeeze risk rising from 13 of 100 as shorts get squeezed
  • A break under $701.16 that fades on light volume

The call. If $QQQ closes below $701.16 with volume expanding instead of fading, I think $692.83 becomes the target over 1 to 3 weeks, with the September low at $700.00 as the first level to fail. A close above $736.13 and I'm wrong, because it puts the index back inside the range it is trying to leave and above both the 20-day and the 50-day.

The Quiet Is the Signal

The Nasdaq 100 has not shown weakness so much as an absence of buyers. A price that sits under both averages with volume at 0.9x is waiting for a reason, and the nearest reason is $701.16. I would rather wait for that close than guess at it.

Desk record. 12 of 56 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (21%), 30 stopped out, 14 ran out of time, average outcome +2.38% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bearish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
