$TEL Fell 1.9% on 0.6x Volume. Is the $205.45 Retest the Entry?

A swept low, a broken structure level and a red day on thin volume put $TEL one retest away from a decision.

$TEL Fell 1.9% on 0.6x Volume. Is the $205.45 Retest the Entry?

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

A stock that breaks structure usually offers a second chance, and it tends to arrive on a day when nobody wants it. $TEL may be handing that over right now.

The stock sits at $221.15, down 1.9% on 0.6x normal volume. What is at stake is whether this drift is the quiet walk back to the demand block at $205.45 to $211.47, or the start of something worse. The sheet gives me a clear read, and a clear line that would prove it wrong.

The Sweep Came Before the Break

$TEL ran the lows at $206.84 and closed back inside the range. It then broke structure up through $216.50 on the daily chart.

My read: that order matters. A sweep followed by a structural break looks like sellers being cleared out before buyers took control, not like a stock rolling over. The demand block at $205.45 to $211.47 is where the move that broke structure started, and I treat it as the zone that has to be defended.

A Red Day With No Sellers in It

Volume over the last five sessions averaged 1.2x the twenty sessions before them. Today's volume is 0.6x normal while the price is down 1.9%.

I think that gap is the point. Participation was there on the way up and is missing on the way down. Price is still 2.6% above its 20-day average of $215.61, and the stock has moved +4.8% over the last twenty sessions. A pullback that shrinks on volume is what a retest looks like before it holds.

The caution is that $TEL closed higher in only 4 of its last 9 sessions. This is not a clean staircase, and I won't pretend it is.

The bull case

  • Structure broke up through $216.50
  • Sweep of $206.84 reclaimed
  • Pullback on 0.6x volume
  • Price 2.6% above 20-day average

The bear case

  • Bear Flag on the daily
  • No block buying in the dark pool
  • Open short-side sell, grade B
  • Neutral market backdrop

What the Tape Does Not Show

Dark pool activity is quiet: no block prints, with 26% off-exchange spread across small prints. Insiders are quiet. Squeeze risk is 4 of 100, and shorts pressing score 40 of 100. Short interest is 6.2M shares, 3.6 days to cover, down 33.5% since the last report.

My read: nobody is hiding a large buyer here, and there is no squeeze to carry the stock. Anyone expecting forced covering will be disappointed. That leaves structure as the whole argument, and I would rather lean on one clean thing than three borrowed ones.

One short-side model also carries an open sell at grade B. I weigh it, but a sell signal sitting beside a stock that just reclaimed structure tells me less than the demand block does.

The Bear Flag Is the Real Argument

The daily chart shows a Bear Flag, a Symmetrical Triangle and a doji in a flat trend. The market backdrop is Neutral, bias +0. That is a mixed signal, and the bear flag is the pattern that deserves respect.

What I notice is that the bear flag and my thesis break at the same place. If the stock loses $204.77 on a close, the sweep was the real move and the flag wins. Above it, the pattern is just a pause. That is a useful kind of disagreement because it comes with one line to watch.

How I Would Let It Play Out

The trigger is a retest of the demand block at $205.45 to $211.47 that holds. Confirmation is a close back above the break level of $216.50 on rising volume. The target is $243.27, which is +10.0% over 1 to 3 weeks.

The stock is $8.85 below its 20-day high of $230.00, set Oct 28, so that level is the first ceiling on the way. Speculation: if the block holds and volume returns, a move through $230.00 is what turns a retest into a trend. The 60-session low of $199.28 from Aug 25 is well below the invalidation, which tells me the damage would be real before that level mattered.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • Daily close below $204.77
  • Demand block at $205.45 to $211.47 fails on rising volume
  • Rally above $216.50 that fades on thin volume
  • Backdrop turns against the stock while price loses the block

The call. If $TEL pulls into the $205.45 to $211.47 demand block, holds it, and then closes back above $216.50 on rising volume, I think $230.00 gets taken and $243.27 becomes the next serious test within 1 to 3 weeks. A close below $204.77 and I'm wrong: the sweep of $206.84 was the real move, and the bear flag takes over.

The Retest Decides It

The red day is not the signal, and the quiet volume tells me not to treat it as one. The signal is what the stock does when it reaches the block where its last move began. Hold there and the structure argument gets its second chance; lose $204.77 and I step aside.

Desk record. 12 of 56 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (21%), 30 stopped out, 14 ran out of time, average outcome +2.38% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
