$SKHY into earnings: why I think $124.97 is the next stop

SK hynix reports today with the stock sitting at the bottom of its range and the tape leaning toward sellers, and I think a soft print gets punished.

$SKHY into earnings: why I think $124.97 is the next stop

SK hynix reports today, Oct 20, and $SKHY walks into it at $135.84, down 4.9% on a session where volume is 0.1x normal. Nobody is sprinting to the exits, and nobody is buying with any urgency either. That kind of quiet before a print bothers me more than a loud tape would.

I lean bearish. My scenario target is $124.97, which is 8.0% below here and about one implied move down. The idea is wrong at $142.36. Above that, I stand aside and admit the tape knew something I didn't.

A tired tape

Price sits in the discount end of its range, 0% up from the low, and the tape leans toward distribution. That is not a stock being accumulated into a catalyst. Someone is handing it over, quietly, into the event.

The daily chart is a mess of mixed signals. A bullish marubozu, a bearish harami, a doji, all inside a down trend. I read that as a market that tried to rally, got a candle it liked, and then lost its nerve. The wider backdrop is neutral with a bias of -7, so there is no tide helping either side. Crowd sentiment is neutral at -8 of 100 and insiders are quiet. Nothing in the soft data gives me a reason to fight the chart.

Where the stops are parked

The liquidity map is tight around price. Equal lows at $135.90 sit just under the market, and equal highs at $136.36 sit just over it. Stops on both sides, a few cents apart. Expect a sweep one way or the other before anything honest happens.

Higher up there are equal highs at $143.03 and a supply block at $144.07. Past those, an unfilled bearish imbalance runs from $148.00 to $151.92. If the print disappoints, that zone is the magnet, but I would treat it as a place to fade a bounce, not a place to chase.

The bull case

  • Shorts pressing at 65 of 100 could cover on a clean beat
  • Bullish marubozu on the daily shows buyers can still show up
  • Uptick on the $1.4M block at $136.22

The bear case

  • Tape leans toward distribution into the event
  • Price stuck at the bottom of its range
  • Bearish imbalance at $148.00 to $151.92 still unfilled
  • Failure to reclaim $162.98 before the report

Reading the off-exchange print

The biggest dark pool print was 10,000 shares at $136.22, about $1.4M, on an uptick. A buyer lifted. Fair enough, but that is one order crossed away from the public book, and it is under half of yesterday's biggest. I would not build a bullish case on it. Call it a footnote.

Shorts are present, not desperate

Short interest is 42.4M shares, up 185.5% since the last report. Days to cover is 2.2. Shorts are pressing at 65 of 100, yet squeeze risk is only 10 of 100. So the positioning is leaning my way without being so crowded that a good number launches the stock through the roof. For anyone thinking long, there is no squeeze set-up here to rescue a bad entry.

That cuts both ways. A big market cap, about $1041.3B, means this is not a name that gets shoved around by a few shorts covering. The reaction will come from the print itself. And the tape is not one-sided yet, so I only want to be short on a failed bounce into an ask wall, not on a hunch.

How I would play it

The trigger on my sheet is a failure to reclaim $162.98 before the report. Price is nowhere near that level, which tells you how much ground has been given up already. Confirmation comes after the number: the first 30 minutes failing to fill the gap. If the stock can't repair the damage right away, I want to be short into $124.97.

I'm wrong if the opposite gap holds through the first hour, or if price goes through $142.36 first. There is a headline about a $35.3M bearish straddle at the $200 strike. I noticed it and I'm leaving it alone. A straddle that far from the market tells me more about hedging than about direction.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • Price trades through $142.36
  • The opposite gap holds through the first hour after the print
  • The first 30 minutes fill the gap cleanly
  • Supply block at $144.07 gets absorbed on volume

Bottom line

I don't love shorting into a print with the crowd already leaning my way, so I'm keeping it conditional on the gap. A weak first 30 minutes gets me involved. A strong first hour sends me home.

The desk leans bearish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either call honest.
