The S&P 500 through $SPY: Dealers Chase Above $777.00, but a $254M Seller Sits at the Price. Who Wins?

The hedging mechanics point up, the largest print points down, and the volume needed to settle it has not arrived yet.

The S&P 500 through $SPY: Dealers Chase Above $777.00, but a $254M Seller Sits at the Price. Who Wins?

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

Two forces are leaning on the same strip of price, and only one of them can be right. Dealer hedging wants to carry the index higher the moment it moves. The largest block on the tape says someone sold into it.

Dealers are short gamma on $SPY, so they buy as it rises and sell as it falls. The call wall sits at $777.00, and what lies above that wall decides whether this turns into a run.

The wall, and the air behind it

$SPY trades at $772.31, 0.6% below the call wall at $777.00. That is where the most call open interest is stacked, and above it there is little to slow a move.

My read: this is the cleanest part of the setup. A short gamma dealer book does not need a story, only a push. If price reaches the wall and trades through it, the hedging turns buyers into forced buyers.

The put wall sits at $767.00, and the gamma flip is near $675.00, far below. That means dealers stay short gamma across the whole area that matters this week. Speculation: the mechanics should amplify a break in either direction, so the direction of the first real push matters more than the level.

A $254M seller that did not move it

The biggest single off-exchange print was 329,020 shares at $772.31, about $254M, on a downtick, which means a seller hit. It was under half of yesterday's biggest, and the dark pool read is NORMAL. A print that size is one order crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades.

On top of that, 55% of off-exchange prints were short sales. The sheet frames the gamma case and the short case as the same case here, and I agree with that framing. Shorts pressing is what a short gamma book feeds on if price rises against them.

The honest caveat is that this is not a classic squeeze. Squeeze risk is 8 of 100 while shorts pressing scores 79 of 100. Days to cover is 2.5, short interest is 93.0M shares, and it is down 1.5% since the last report. My read: nobody is trapped. If this runs, it runs on hedging flow, not on panicked covering.

The bull case

  • Dealers short gamma must buy rallies
  • Air pocket above the $777.00 call wall
  • 55% of off-exchange prints were short sales
  • Closed higher in 6 of last 9 sessions

The bear case

  • Volume at 0.9x of the prior twenty sessions
  • Squeeze risk only 8 of 100
  • $254M seller hit the downtick
  • Bearish multi-leg flow of $125.27M

What the tape has not confirmed

Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.9x the twenty sessions before them. $SPY closed higher in 6 of its last 9 sessions and sits 0.2% above its 20-day average of $770.90, yet the daily chart shows a doji and two spinning tops in a flat trend. That is a market that has not decided.

A recent headline flagged a $125.27M bearish multi-leg options trade struck below the current price. I will not say it caused anything, but it is a reminder that someone is paying for downside while the crowd stays neutral at 11 of 100. The market backdrop is Neutral, with a bias of +7.

Hedge pressure is only 3% of an average day's volume. My read: that is too small to lift the index alone. It needs real participation behind it, and volume is the missing ingredient.

The road from $777.00 to $829.04

The trigger is a push through $777.00 on volume. The confirmation is call volume outrunning put volume while dealers chase the hedge. Without both, I stay patient.

The first obstacle past the wall is the 20-day high of $781.62, which sits $9.31 above the price. The 60-session high is the same $781.62 from Oct 6. Speculation: clearing that level with volume is where the air pocket opens, and $829.04, +7.3% over 1 to 2 weeks, is where the hedge buying runs out.

Support is mapped below. A swing high at $772.89 sits just above the price, and bullish gaps are stacked at $770.10, $767.12 and $764.50. Those gaps are why I would not fear a shallow dip, only a failure.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A failed push that closes back under today's low
  • Call volume stays below put volume through $777.00
  • Volume fades further below 0.9x as price nears the wall
  • A close at or under $718.25

The call. If $SPY pushes through $777.00 on real volume and call volume outruns put volume, I think dealer hedging carries it past $781.62 and toward $829.04 over 1 to 2 weeks. That is speculation, and it depends on volume showing up. I am wrong if the push fails and $SPY closes back under today's low, and the thesis is dead at $718.25.

The Call I'm Making

The mechanics favor buyers and the volume has not agreed yet. I am leaning bullish because dealers have to chase once the wall breaks, and I will not upgrade until that break shows up on the tape. A seller of $254M did not stop the price, and that tells me the next test is not far away.

Desk record. 12 of 57 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (21%), 31 stopped out, 14 ran out of time, average outcome +2.34% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
