Why the Options Book Decides Where $PLTR Goes Next

Dealers who sold the calls have to hedge as price moves, and that can matter more than the chart. My read on where it leads.

Why the Options Book Decides Where $PLTR Goes Next

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

The people who may move Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A Common Stock this week aren't traders. They're dealers hedging a book they didn't choose.

$PLTR sits at $196.42, $16.52 below its 20-day high of $212.94 and $11.97 above its 20-day low of $184.45.

My read: neutral, waiting on confirmation. I want confirmation before I call a direction.

Dealers have a deadline

Against its own 60-session range, $PLTR is 7.8% below the high of $212.94 (Oct 12) and 28.6% above the low of $152.70 (Aug 6).

$PLTR closed higher in 4 of its last 9 sessions. Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.9x the twenty sessions before them.

The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -7.2% on Oct 16. Dealers are short gamma on PLTR: they have to buy as it rises and sell as it falls, which is what turns a move into a run.

100% of the open options are same-day expiries, the fuel that makes gamma moves violent in the final hours.

What I make of it: when the hedging runs the same direction as the price, it stops being background noise and starts being the move.

What the market looks to be pricing in

Order-flow analysis classifies the activity as accumulation, buyers in control, strength 67 of 100. Smart money is accumulating: absorbing sells, refilling bids, working buy orders without lifting price. Expect a markup once supply is exhausted. Off-exchange trading: QUIET: no block prints, 22% off-exchange. No block-size prints (10,000+ shares or $1M+) in this window. Off-exchange volume is spread across small prints, which is what internalized retail flow looks like.

In options, dealers short gamma, call wall $210.00, put wall $180.00, gamma flip near $160.00, 100% of open options expire today, hedge pressure 0% of an average day's volume. Days to cover 2.4, 56.1M shares short, short interest -17.6% since the last report.

Squeeze risk 11 of 100; shorts pressing 75 of 100.

Across the broader market, the read is Neutral (bias -9).

What I make of it: the data agrees with itself more than it argues, and that counts for something. It still falls short of proof.

The bull case

  • Gamma squeeze setup with a measured path to $210.00
  • Order-flow read: accumulation, buyers in control, strength 67 of 100

The bear case

  • Backdrop: Neutral (bias -9)
  • Dealer positioning is inferred, not observed

The part nobody is talking about

What I think traders are overlooking is the volume. Price can drift to a level on almost nothing, and what it does there needs real participation. Without it, a break is easy to fade.

The price alone doesn't show it.

If I'm right, and what proves me wrong

If $PLTR posts a push through $210.00 on volume and volume expands, I think $210.00 becomes the next serious test. Under $182.67, I'm wrong.

The honest objection is that open interest shows contracts, not who holds which side, so any dealer map is an inference. Strikes with heavy interest get crossed without a ripple more often than people admit.

That's the whole trade: a level to clear, a line that proves me wrong, and not much in between.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A close through $182.67.
  • Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
  • Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
  • A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.

What I'm watching

I'm neutral until the stock gives me a reason. The level is clear and so is the line that proves me wrong, so there's nothing to do until one of them gets tested.

Desk record. 12 of 69 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (17%), 36 stopped out, 21 ran out of time, average outcome +1.69% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
