$XNCR Short Squeeze Setup: 79% Short Volume and 10.1 Days to Cover
Short volume is a clue, not a confession. My read on what it does and doesn't say about $XNCR.

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).
Somebody is still shorting $XNCR into this, and the FINRA data doesn't care about anyone's opinion. It counts.
$XNCR sits at $31.25, $2.35 below its 20-day high of $33.60 and $9.28 above its 20-day low of $21.97.
My read: lean bullish. Buyers are close enough to force the issue, but I want volume before I call it a breakout.
Pressing into strength
Against its own 60-session range, $XNCR is 7.0% below the high of $33.60 (Oct 26) and 63.9% above the low of $19.07 (Aug 6). $XNCR closed higher in 6 of its last 9 sessions.
Volume over the last five sessions averaged 1.4x the twenty sessions before them.
The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was +23.6% on Oct 26. 79% of XNCR's off-exchange volume printed as short sales (FINRA daily short volume), against a normal 67%. Days to cover: 10.1. Every short in the name needs 10.1 full days of normal volume to get out.
What I make of it: a crowded short matters only if the stock stops falling, and then covering becomes buying. Whether that starts here is the whole question.
What the market looks to be pricing in
Off-exchange trading: HEAVY: $1.7M block at $29.63, 2.3x yesterday's biggest. Biggest single off-exchange print: 58,944 shares at $29.63, about $1.7M, on a downtick (seller hit). A print that size is one order being crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades.
In options, dealers long gamma, call wall $35.00, put wall $25.00, gamma flip near $12.50, hedge pressure 1% of an average day's volume. Days to cover 10.1, 16.4M shares short, short interest +51.0% since the last report. Squeeze risk 47 of 100; shorts pressing 42 of 100.
Across the broader market, the read is Lean bullish (bias +21).
Insiders: quiet.
What I make of it: the pieces mostly point the same way as the price, which is more than I can say for most setups. None of them is proof.
The bull case
- Short squeeze setup with a measured path to $43.23
- Backdrop: Lean bullish (bias +21)
The bear case
- Borrow cost decides who exits first
The part nobody is talking about
What I think traders are overlooking is how close the call wall sits to my target. The strike where the calls are stacked can pull price toward it or pin it there, and that makes it a level to watch, not a prediction.
The price alone doesn't show it.
If I'm right, and what proves me wrong
If $XNCR posts a close above the recent high on rising volume and volume expands, I think $43.23 becomes the next serious test. Under $28.13, I'm wrong.
The honest objection is that short volume is not a short position. A high ratio is routine in liquid names, and sometimes the shorts are simply right.
That's the whole trade: a level to clear, a line that proves me wrong, and not much in between.
Kill switch
Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.
- A close through $28.13.
- Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
- Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
- A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.
What I'm watching
Buyers are close enough to force the issue. I want the volume before I call it anything more than a lean.
Desk record. 8 of 35 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (23%), 21 stopped out, 6 ran out of time, average outcome +2.09% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.
The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
