The Shorts in $FTK Keep Pressing. What If That's the Mistake?

Short volume is a clue, not a confession. My read on what it does and doesn't say about Flotek Industries.

The Shorts in $FTK Keep Pressing. What If That's the Mistake?

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

Somebody is still shorting Flotek Industries into this, and the FINRA data doesn't care about anyone's opinion. It counts.

$FTK sits at $29.99, $0.29 above its 20-day high of $29.70 and $7.31 above its 20-day low of $22.68.

My read: bullish. Buyers are in control and the evidence backs it, though I still want the level to clear on volume.

A short that will not fall

Against its own 60-session range, $FTK is 24.4% below the high of $39.67 (Aug 12) and 35.4% above the low of $22.15 (Sep 2). $FTK closed higher in 5 of its last 9 sessions.

Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.7x the twenty sessions before them. The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -8.3% on Oct 14.

72% of FTK's off-exchange volume printed as short sales (FINRA daily short volume), against a normal 76%.

Days to cover: 9.1. Every short in the name needs 9.1 full days of normal volume to get out.

What I make of it: a crowded short matters only if the stock stops falling, and then covering becomes buying. Whether that starts here is the whole question.

What is already in the price

Off-exchange trading: QUIET: no block prints, 20% off-exchange. No block-size prints (10,000+ shares or $1M+) in this window. Off-exchange volume is spread across small prints, which is what internalized retail flow looks like. In options, dealers long gamma, call wall $35.00, put wall $24.00, gamma flip near $20.00, hedge pressure 0% of an average day's volume.

Days to cover 9.1, 4.2M shares short, short interest +11.1% since the last report.

Squeeze risk 6 of 100; shorts pressing 78 of 100. Across the broader market, the read is Neutral (bias +3). Insiders: quiet.

What I make of it: the pieces mostly point the same way as the price, which is more than I can say for most setups. None of them is proof.

The bull case

  • Short squeeze setup with a measured path to $40.60

The bear case

  • Backdrop: Neutral (bias +3)
  • Borrow cost decides who exits first

The detail that changes the read

What I think traders are overlooking is the volume. Price can drift to a level on almost nothing, and what it does there needs real participation. Without it, a break is easy to fade.

That part doesn't show up on the chart.

The call, and the line that breaks it

If $FTK posts a close above the recent high on rising volume and volume expands, I think $40.60 becomes the next serious test. Under $26.99, I'm wrong.

The honest objection is that short volume is not a short position. A high ratio is routine in liquid names, and sometimes the shorts are simply right.

So the plan is simple. Wait for the level, wait for the volume, and respect the line.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A close through $26.99.
  • Selling absorbs the buying at a key level and price loses it on volume.
  • Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
  • A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.

Where I land

Of everything on the page, one thing decides it: whether volume shows up at $29.70. I'm betting it does.

Desk record. 24 of 130 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (18%), 68 stopped out, 38 ran out of time, average outcome +1.45% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bullish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
