The Nasdaq 100 through $QQQ: Another Look at $QQQ, With Fresh Eyes

Support is only support until it isn't. My read on Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1, and the line that tells me I'm wrong.

The Nasdaq 100 through $QQQ: Another Look at $QQQ, With Fresh Eyes

Listen: hear this article read aloud (about 2 min).

Support on Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 is being asked a question it may not have a good answer to.

$QQQ sits at $707.31, $55.55 below its 20-day high of $762.86 and $6.15 above its 20-day low of $701.16.

My read: lean bearish. Sellers have the edge for now, but I want the floor to give before I say more.

Sitting on the floor

Against its own 60-session range, $QQQ is 7.3% below the high of $762.86 (Oct 6) and 3.1% above the low of $685.82 (Aug 3). $QQQ closed higher in 3 of its last 9 sessions.

Volume over the last five sessions averaged 0.9x the twenty sessions before them. The largest one-day move in the past twenty sessions was -2.9% on Oct 22.

Price is below its 20-day average of $733.77 and below the 50-day at $725.34.

The stock is -1.5% over five sessions and -4.0% over twenty.

What I make of it: a floor that holds on falling volume is a good sign, and a floor that holds only because nobody has pushed it yet is not.

Who is positioned for what

Off-exchange trading: NORMAL: $204M block at $708.48, -41% yesterday's biggest, high off-exchange share. Biggest single off-exchange print: 288,230 shares at $708.48, about $204M, on an uptick (buyer lifted). A print that size is one order being crossed away from the public book, not a crowd of small trades. Days to cover 1.9, 70.5M shares short, short interest +5.1% since the last report.

Squeeze risk 10 of 100; shorts pressing 87 of 100.

Across the broader market, the read is Neutral (bias +1). On the daily chart, technical patterns include bullish_belt_hold, spinning_top, doji in a flat trend. A recent headline reads: $QQQ Options Flow: $29.11M Bullish Multi-leg Options Trade Across $680–$713 Strikes. I am reporting it as context, not as the reason for the move.

What I make of it: the data agrees with itself more than it argues, and that counts for something. It still falls short of proof.

The bull case

  • No catalyst identified

The bear case

  • Market narrative setup with a measured path to $679.02
  • Backdrop: Neutral (bias +1)

What I think traders are overlooking

What I think traders are overlooking is the volume. Price can drift to a level on almost nothing, and what it does there needs real participation. Without it, a break is easy to fade.

None of that is visible in the candles.

What happens next, and when I'm out

If $QQQ prints a close below $701.16 and volume expands, I think $679.02 becomes the next serious test. Above $721.46, I'm wrong.

The honest objection is that a build-up is obvious in hindsight and ambiguous in real time. Plenty of quiet ranges stay quiet, and nothing here is a catalyst.

Clear the level on volume and I'm interested. Fail below the line and I'm out of the idea.

Kill switch

Any one of these and the thesis is over, no averaging down, no renaming it.

  • A close through $721.46.
  • Buying absorbs the selling at a key level and price reclaims it on volume.
  • Order flow reverses: the sweeps and blocks turn to the other side.
  • A scheduled event changes the picture before the trigger is reached.

My read

I lean lower, and I'd want the floor to give before I'd say more than that.

Desk record. 8 of 33 scenario targets traded before their invalidation (24%), 19 stopped out, 6 ran out of time, average outcome +2.62% per piece. Past pieces say nothing about this one.

The desk's scenario leans bearish. Bull or bear, the kill switch above is what keeps either view honest.
